The subterranean structure of Basilica Cistern was built in 532 A.D. salvaged from the ruins of the temples and fine carved capitals. Originally the structure was carved underneath the Stoa Basilica to serve as a reservoir near the Black sea. Long forgotten it was found by Gyllius and the Ottomans, further cleaned by the Metropolitan Municipality to bring highlight on its great grandeur and finely constructed 336 columns which give this place its gravity. Istanbul Basilica Cistern is today an atmospheric experience with wooden platforms carved ceilings and a feeling of patrolling in a surface where water was stored but is also home to schools of ghostly carp.
